A Tropical Cardiff

A Tropical Paradise... In Cardiff

The UK’s biggest Balloon Art Festival is returning to Cardiff Bay for the second time on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 August, bringing world class instructors and award winning sculptors to Wales to create a helium-filled tropical paradise.

Following the success of the 2011 festival, Cardiff Bay’s popular entertainment destination, The Red Dragon Centre, has once again teamed up with Barry based company, Doctor Bob Balloons, to transform the Centre into a spectacular Paradise Island, featuring tropical animals, plants and an 18 foot giraffe, all made entirely of balloons. The event is free* for all to attend.

Actor Jay Ruckley, who stars as the mischievous grandfather in popular CBeebies programme Grandpa in My Pocket, will be officially opening the event on Saturday 17 and will be available to sign autographs for fans at 12pm. Throughout the weekend, a team of Doctor Bob’s staff will also be on hand from 12pm – 5pm to meet and greet visitors and to talk about their creations.

The Balloon Art Festival highlights will include:

  • Giraffe – over 18ft tall, made up of 3000 mocha brown balloons and over 2000 goldenrod balloons.
  • The festival will use 40,000 balloons and 30 litres of nitrogen. 12 skilled balloon artists will be working alongside Doctor Bob and his staff to create a tropical paradise, totalling more than 1,500 man hours.
  • Balloons will be 100% Qualatex biodegradable latex balloons that decompose at the same rate as an oak leaf
  • Showing an art form used by balloon artists over the world at industry events which rarely goes on display to the public

Doctor Bob Armstrong founded Doctor Bob’s Balloons in 1995, and has since travelled all over the world with his balloons. He said: “We have seen festivals like this in Italy, Malaysia and Dallas for years and it’s great that we’re able to bring the festival to Wales for a second time and to host it at The Red Dragon Centre.

“We were overwhelmed by the amazing response we received to the first festival. We can’t wait to build on the success of 2011 and reinvent the festival with a new theme for 2013. The 18ft foot giraffe is going to look particularly spectacular along with an 8ft sun sculpture beaming in the backdrop.”

Emma Constantinou, Marketing Manager for The Red Dragon Centre said: “We’re really excited that the Balloon Art Festival is returning for 2013, and to be working with Doctor Bob’s Balloons again after such a successful festival in 2011.

“This year’s theme is going to be great and we can’t wait to welcome visitors into our balloon-made Paradise Island – you never know what you’re going to get with the British summer, so this year we’re bringing it indoors! The sculptures will sit alongside our great attractions, including our state-of-the-art cinema, restaurants, gym, casino, and bowling alley, offering a great day out for all ages.”

The team will also be creating a balloon sculpture of a giant palm tree and toucan in a deck chair, drawn by Amira Arish aged 9, from Murch Junior School in Dinas Powys, who was the winner of The Red Dragon Centre’s design competition.

The previous festival in 2011 was the first of its kind in the UK, and attracted over 35,000 visitors in three days. 30,000 balloons and over 680 hours of work were involved in turning the centre into an underwater kingdom. The balloons used are environmentally friendly, taking only 6 months to bio-degrade.
